-Description

Autavia is a legendary chronograph of Heuer, former company of TAG Heuer.

The name was coined from a combination of the words AUTomobile (automobile) and AVIAtion (aircraft).

From 1933 to 1957, Autavia was produced as a dashboard timer for automobiles and aircraft.

From 1962, the Autavia produced as a chronograph, and over the next 23 years, more than 85 models were produced.

Because of its original design and high legibility, many Formula 1 drivers have used it, and certain models are named like the "Paul Newman" of the Rolex Daytona.

This watch is Ref. 1163, one of the third generation of Autavia watches.

The third generation was characterized by the change in case shape from round to C-shaped and the introduction of Heuer's automatic chronograph movement, Cal.11 (later Cal.12).

This case design became the template for various subsequent Autavia models.

The most famous of the 1163 series is Ref. 1163V, the "V" stands for Viceroy, an American cigarette brand.

In 1972, as part of a campaign, a customer could purchase an Autavia for $88 by providing a receipt for 10 packs of Viceroy cigarettes.

After the campaign ended, production continued as 1163V, which was reportedly sold until the early 1980s.

So, 1163V is the most known model as a vintage Autavia.

This watch, Ref. 1163, was only produced for three years from 1969 to 1972, just before the Viceroy campaign.

And it was used only in the early stages of the campaign.

So, it has the same design as the 1163V but without the V in the reference engraving.

As the model immediately before the 1163V, it is called Pre-Viceroy among the collectors.

The dial is the iconic Autavia design, and the luminous is tritium.

The bezel shows some patina, but overall the watch is in good condition.

The movement is the Cal.11, one of the world's first automatic chronograph movements.

The main feature of this watch is that it has the crown at 9 o'clock, which is the opposite position of a normal watch.

The photos of the movement were taken before the service.
